Two varieties of Mahogany are found in Sri Lanka, to the best of my knowledge, viz
1. Swietenia macrophylla - the commonest, broad-leaved mahogany
2. Swietenia mahoganii - also called the Cuban Mahogany - since the colonials planted some, as one may have seen in Jaffna and at the entrance to the Botanical gardens Peradeniya - more typical of the world reknowned Mahogany
Swietenia Macrophylla is the scientific name of a Mahogany tree.
The scientific name for the national tree of Sri Lanka is Shorea robusta, commonly known as the Sal Tree. This tree holds cultural significance in Sri Lanka and is also found in other parts of South Asia.
The name would be Swietenia spp. Family: Meliaceae.

Albizzia lebbek
Shorea spp is the scientific name of the lauan tree. The specific type of lauan tends to be red, whose scientific name therefore is Shorea teysmanniana. Its common name is Philippine mahogany even though its wood isn't mahogany.

There are two reasons why the Mahogany glider is so named. This little marsupial relies on the Swamp mahogany tree, Lophostemon suaveolens, as a crucial component of its habitat. The other reason the Mahogany glider has this name if because of its deep brown mahogany colour.
