If you look closely, it actually looks like a pistol (gun), aimed west, with Washington DC at the "trigger".

There is only a separation of about 2 miles (3 km) between West Virginia and Pennsylvania at Hancock, Maryland. The "tip of the barrel" consists of Allegany and Garrett counties, extending to within 50 miles (80 km) of the southwest corner of Pennsylvania.
