The geographic feature that most isolated the rest of China from western China is the mountains (Himalayas, Kunlun, and Qilian/Qinlang ) that stretch from southwest China into the central part of China as well as the Taihang mountains of eastern China.
The Gobi Desert stretches across the north central part of China and into Mongolia - not really the northwest of China.
The Taklamakan Desert Desert lies in the Western part of China with only a very small part of China west of it.
The Sahara Desert, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Red Sea have helped to isolate Egypt throughout history. The Cataracts of the Nile might also be mentioned, as they halted boat traffic.
