The novel, A Christmas Carol was written by Charles Dickens and published on 9 December, 1843.Dickens originally planned to write a pamphlet entitled An Appeal to the People of England, on Behalf of the Poor Man's Child, inspired by the Children's Employment Commission Report, which was to have outlined the plight of the vast underclass of London. But after pleas to Commissioners of the report went unanswered, Dickens abandoned the idea believing a well-written story would have greater impact.
As a result of parents who were financially and emotionally incapable of assuring his livelihood, Charles Dickens began to support himself at a very young age. This early self-reliance imbibed him with the driving ambition and solid work ethic that continued throughout his career as a writer. He drew on his difficult upbringing, populating his books with the persons and situations who had influenced his life to create great literature.
