The work black people did during slavery was long and tedious, slaves were lucky to be paid, many worked for free because their 'owners' had the ability to do so. Before the end of slavery, the slaves were working cheaply. The main work that the slaves did was farming, or factory working, which made money for the owners of the business, therefore meaning that they got to live in luxury while the slaves slept in piles on the floor covered by rough sacks. One of the jobs that these people had to do was cotton farming, which was part of a work triangle at the time. The UK sent cotton to countries like Africa in return for slaves, which they then sent to America in return for the cotton plants as they didn't go in the UK, and so the triangle continued. After slavery, all slaves wanted to get as far away from the slave owners as possible to avoid having to work there again. This then meant that they needed to go away and set up themselves somewhere to live, as well as having to make the money for the place and the money to live, for things such as food, which was provided to them before in at least some form. Many of the slaves now ran and worked on other farms, but they were still treated with the same type of hostility that they had before, except now they were given pay for their work. Some managed to set up their own farms and getaways from the work, but others weren't so lucky, and ended up going back to jobs similar or in some cases identical to those that they had been freed from.
