Stephen F. Austin initially supported Santa Anna, seeing him as a potential ally for Texas settlers. However, as Santa Anna's centralist policies and increasingly authoritarian rule became apparent, Austin's perspective shifted. The Mexican government's refusal to address Texan grievances and Santa Anna's military actions against the settlers ultimately led Austin to view him as a threat to Texas autonomy, prompting his support for rebellion. This change was solidified by personal experiences and the escalating tensions between Texas and the Mexican government.
