In some people's opinions Raul Castro is evil because he is part of the Marxist government in Cuba which have beliefs contrary to those of some of the world's most influential western democracies, however it is important to remember that whilst the oppressive government of Fidel Castro may be looked down upon by western democracies, how could it be ethical to support the brutal government of Batista previous to this government? It is no secret that the Batista government was oppressive and exploitative to its own people and one where only a select few Cubans could reap the benefits of society and most Cuban civilians lived on less than $2 a day. This government was supported by western democracies and yet it was itself a complete contradiction to democracy. Studies have shown improvement within tolerance to religious sects in Cuba today which previously was held as a major critic against both Castro brothers government, not only this, the country under the Castro regime has one of the highest literacy rates and on of the best medical care amongst the worlds nations. Whilst oppression is never excusable government behaviour it is important to think about the following in the Cuban case.
Democracy is defined today by rich western nations, if less influential states share values contrary to this then they will undoubtedly become tarnished. With Cuba in terms of democracy and development, is it better to have development with equity and slowly introduce an idea of development once ameliorating the 'self help' nature of society? Or is it better to develop with democracy in mind but with so much inequity that in realty the major part of society don't vote, think about politics have no faith in government because their sole objective is to make provisions. It may be true that Cubans are not among the richest people, however it has been demonstrated by many journalists that they remain among some of the happiest people in the world. They are helpful and good natured people because their minds are not plagued by money.
