The original inhabitants of the Bahamas were the Lucayan Taíno, an Arawakan-speaking people. They arrived around 500 AD and lived in small, agricultural communities, relying on fishing, farming, and trade. The arrival of European explorers in the late 15th century led to the decline of the Lucayan population due to diseases and enslavement. By the early 17th century, the Lucayan were largely displaced or annihilated, leading to the islands being uninhabited before later European settlement.
