Burma was once part of the British Empire. More specifically, the UK placed Burma as part of her Indian Empire. The British sought the minerals, and precious gems that Burma had. It won its freedom in 1937.
British rule in Burma was created in 1824.
Because at that time great britain was a colonial power that saw burma and the far east in general as connected to its main colony, India. In view of David Cameron's visit to Burma and the west in general's 'sucking up' to the military junta my best guess is a share in the abundant natural resources of that gentle country.

The Indians were kind of allies to the British as they were fighting for them in Imphal and the Indian battalions fought in Burma as well
