Iphigenia told King Thoas that the two men (Orestes and Pylades) that he sent her to sacrifice for Artemis were impure, and that she was taking the image of Artemis to the seashore to purify it to cleanse the two men. She told him to let the captives be brought forth and it be proclaimed that no one could go near her. The King agreed, and everything seemed to be going well until they actually boarded the ship. However, at the mouth of the harbor, they were driven back by wind. The King was going to kill them, but Athena appeared and told him to spare them, as they were under divine guidance.
