It wasn't religion that sent them to exploration, but greed. They were looking for a water route to Asia as well as gold and riches no matter where they landed. There were Catholic priests with them on ship and land. Prayers were said every hour on ship. When the Spanish found Native American people they considered them perfect for slavery. Columbus wrote this in his journal about the people he found on Hispinola. Generally, the slave's soul is not considered when they are enslaved otherwise they wouldn't be made slaves.
