Nevada sided with the Union during the Civil War. From March 2, 1861 to October 31, 1864, Nevada was the Nevada Territory, formerly a part of the Utah Territory. It gained statehood in circumvention of the required 60,000 population, as the President Lincoln and Congress considered it urgent to bring another Union state in, especially prior to the November 1864 elections.
