When the Dakota Territory was organized in 1861 it included much of present-day Montana until 1864 and Wyoming until 1868. The remainder was divided into North Dakota and South Dakota in 1889. A small portion of Nebraska was also part of the Dakota Territory until it was returned to Nebraska in 1882.
