First of all remember that Pompeii was not a civilization in itself. It was just a town in the area of Italy called Campania. This area was conquered by many different peoples. The two most important, before Rome, were the Etruscans and the Samnites. The town, village or collection of huts that eventually evolved into the town of Pompeii was influenced by these cultures. The Samnites seemed to have the most lasting impact, due to their language. They spoke the Oscan language and even in the days of the Romans, Oscan was still spoken and archaeologists have found inscriptions in the old Oscan language in the ruins of Pompeii. There is no firm date for these culture or civilization changes, except perhaps for the Roman takeover, which was after the conclusion of the Samnite War.
