What took Utah so long to become a state?

In 1844 following the assignation of the Latter Day Saint prophet over 11,000 Mormons made the trek to the unincorporated land we know as Utah today to avoid persecution in Illinois. The Mormons named the land Deseret and were annexed into the Union from Mexico as the Utah Territory in 1850 as a result of the Mexican-American War. Utah was not granted statehood until 1896 as a result of the LDS practice of polygamy (having multiple wives) the U.S. government would not admit Utah until the practice was stopped.

Basicly it was the the U.S., who claimed the region in the treaty ending the Mexican war fron 1848. Though the Mormons might have had the U.S. make it a state. I don't Know for sure, but i feel the people who ask this question shouldn't have typed it to read nothing about it.

Well, most of it was because of polygamy. The East was by far against polygamy and they were the ones who decided who became a state. Polygamy went on for a LONG while because Mormons didn't want to go against their religion back in the day. Then Wilford Woodruff ended polygamy in 1890. It had taken Utah 45 years to become a state.
