The Samoan Crisis was a confrontation between the US, Germany & Great Britain from 1887-1889 over control of the Samoan Islands during the Samoan Civil War. The Tripartite Convention of 1899 ended the crisis, leading to American Samoa & German Samoa.
People have lived in the Samoan Islands for over 2,500 years. The first European to discover the Samoan Island was Dutch navigator Jacob Roggeveen, in 1722.

As the plate moves northwestward, magma from the hotspot creates a series of volcanic islands. Over time, older islands erode and sink, while new islands form above the hotspot, resulting in a linear alignment. This process has been ongoing for millions of years, contributing to the islands' straight chain appearance.
