Due to this nature, there are almost no surface rivers and most water comes from sinkholes in the ground, known as cenotes.Without a source of fresh water, no agriculture is possible; without agriculture, large population densities -- even small towns -- are not possible at all. This means that without sinkholes, the Mayan civilization wouldn't have flourished; at least not on the Yucatan Peninsula.
