Houses in Australia vary according to the region.

The early houses in Queensland were typically wooden or weatherboard, and often built higher on stilts. This was to catch the breezes in the humid weather, and to keep the houses above the water in floods. Whilst modern Queensland homes are usually brick, these older "Queenslanders" (as they are called) are much prized, and often renovated when they are bought. originally they were made with corrugated iron roofs, though many have been replaced with tiles.

In the southern states and the west, early houses were typically stone. Modern houses throughout Australia, however, tend to be brick. The older parts of Sydney were typified by terraced workers' cottages, and these tiny houses are still valuable real estate.

Houses in Australia can be lowset or highset. They commonly lack attics and basements for which US houses are known.
