There are no roads in most of the rural lands between the Sahara desert and the Niger River. People travel via the river or by horse and cart. It hasn't changed since the 1800's. Market places spring up around the mosques, literally - they are open air tents with phenomenal colors. There is the greatest poverty in the world with the average workers earning slightly more than $1.50/ day.
There are little adobe huts and no sign of the 21 century. The grains are stored in huts with thatched roofs and meat is stored and dried in adobe.
