The flag of the United States of America, was created in 1777 during our War for Independence from Great Britain (our "Revolutionary War") which started in 1775 and ended in 1783. Our Declaration of Independence from Great Britain was signed on July 4th 1776. The Maritime Committee of the Continental Congress needed a flag to distinguish our ships from the British warships and others. So, on June 14th 1777 the Flag Resolution was adopted: "Resolved: that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."
