After eleven years of war and over 1 million deaths, Mexico became independent from Spain on September 27, 1821. It wasn't until 1836 that Spain recognized Mexico's independence, but by that time, several countries -- including England and the United States -- had already recognized Mexico as an independent country, and had already established trade routes with the new nation.
