Lincoln needed a cause to rally the masses behind his decision to continue the war, that's when he decided to use a human rights campaign, called abolishment of slavery, whe he went public near the end of the war with this concept, many people no longer opposed the war, and got behind Lincoln to continue the fight, thus putting the initial reason for the war on the back burner, the war ended pretty quick once the reason for the fight changed!
