Nevada was explored by native Americans and later by Jedediah Smith, Joseph Walker, Charles Fremont, Kit Carson, trappers of the Hudson Bay Company, and many others. in 1878, John Muir guided a party of the US Coast and Geodetic Survey measuring the Arc of the 39th Parallel across California, Nevada and Utah using heliographs placed on high mountain peaks.
