My uncle was on the last B-29 shot down over Japan on August 8th 1945. It is unclear what tename of the plane was as the original plane he was on and that we know the name of may have been considered war weary and they were on a different plane. What we do know is that his plane was named the Thunderbird as the crew name and The City of Phoenix as the unit name. Tail Number was 44-87664. 6th Sqdn., 29th BG., 314th Wing, 20th AF., N. Field, Guam. Mission to Tachikawa, plane hit by FLAK, exploded, Target was Nakajima aircraft plant. 2 crewmwn bailed out. Both captured but one killed by locals. The Survivor returned to the States and married my aunt.
