The first formal schools appeared in the 1630s. The government was only concerned about reading and writing, so you had to go to school. If you didn't obey the law, they fined you for 5 pounds, which was approximately $25. In New York, the education was left to royal governors and various church groups. Some of the children who came from richer families got to have their own private tutor.
