Many people consider the following four military initiatives to have been the most significant in Israel's modern history: 1948 War of Independence 1956 Sinai Campaign 1967 Six-day War 1973 Yom Kippur War. There was also an 1982 engagement with PLO factions in Lebanon during which Israel destroyed much of the PLO's infrastructure, which was being utilized to launch attacks against towns in the Galilee area. (It was called Operation Peace for Galilee.) Israel established a security zone in southern Lebanon where they have positioned troops to protect their citizens in the Galilee area.
