Current remittances from the US to Mexico equal approximately US$ 22.45 billion. These represent 1.9% of Mexico's GDP (2012) or 7% of the federal government budget. Although impact wouldn't be felt immediately (at least during the first couple of years), on the long run it would mean several families in Mexico would be thrown into poverty, as remittances from relatives in the US represent a large source of income, especially for families where one parent works in the US while the other is in charge of raising the children. If remittances were to stop altogether, Mexico would see an increase of population under the poverty line well over 66% of its total population; this in effect would among other things, increase the number of illegal immigrants, or worsen problems such as drug smuggling into the United States.
