Alaska is contiguous to Canada, and geographically Alaska has more in common with Canada than with the USA. However, the citizens of Alaska are Americans and are brought up to believe that the USA is the greatest nation on earth. They would take much persuading before they would abandon the mother country. Certainly the USA has a fine Constitution, but America is a state with a great gap between rich and poor, and much racial discrimination. Canada is a federal parliamentary democracy on the British model, which is arguably more accessible to the common man. Anyone can be President of the USA (provided they are a multi-millionaire). Great wealth is unnecessary to achieve entry in Canadian politics.
The vibrant French-speaking state of Quebec adds an interesting element to Canadian life. Vancouver is alleged to have one of the happiest and most contented populations in the world.
I would like to see Alaska leave the USA and join Canada, as it would make a sensible and cohesive go-political unit. (Much of the western coast of northern America was unfairly granted to Alaska rather than Canada; an a federation would address this issue). As the North west passage becomes open to shipping, Canada-Alaska will become globally significant.
Will it ever happen? I doubt it. Alaska has oil which the USA would not give up; and Alaskan citizens may be blind to the benefits of being Canadian. But it would be very good if it were to happen!
