He went to Medina.
----------------------- Mecca is the birthplace of Muhammad, Prophet and founder of the Islamic religion. Every year, millions of devout Muslims go on a pilgrimage, known as hajj, to the city of Mecca.
Umayyad leaders in Mecca disliked Muhammad because his religion posed a threat to thier regime. He was forced to flee Mecca and go to Medina.
Hajj is a pilgrimage to Mecca. It is a must that a Muslim go there once in a lifetime. Mecca is the holy place form the Muslims because it was the city where Muhammad founded the new religion called Islam.
Muslims have to go Mecca to do the ritual worship of Hajj (pilgrimage) and/or Omrah besides praying in Al-Masjid Al-Haram (or called the Grand Mosque). They visit Medina to pay respect to prophet Muhammad and his close companions, Abou Bakr and Omar, who are buried there and to pray for them.
people pilgrimage to mecca to pray. That is one reason, but they also go there because that is where their Prophet (Muhammad) was born. This pilgrimage is like a coming of age type of thing. You are supposed to travel, or make the pilgrimage to, Mecca at least once in your life, to pray to Allah. It is the Muslims holiest city.

Mecca and Medina
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) returned to Mecca (Makkah) for two reasons:To remove the Idols (worshiped by unbelievers) that spread around Kaba.To allow Muslims to practice their worship of Hajj to Mecca with no harm or restrictions.Muhammad and his followers returned to Makkah (or Mecca) to get it available for hajj (or ilgrimage) because they were formerly deprived from doing hajj. However, when the Meccas (or Makkah) surrendered to them without fight, prophet (PBUH) forgave all of them and didn't take any revenge against any of the Meccas who tortured Muslims and deprived them from their money and properties before they were obliged to immigrate from Mecca or against who fought him and his followers after he left Mecca to Medina. He and his followers removed all the idols around Kaaba. Then, they all returned to Medina without getting with them back any of the wealth or properties in Mecca even their own former money or properties.
Makka Mukarmah = Mecca.
"Mecca" is a city in Saudi Arabia where those who follow the teachings of the prophet Muhammad try to travel to, or make a pilgrimage, or "Hajj" to, at least once in their lifetime. They enter in to the "Ka'ba" for this worship. Only those who are Muslims may enter into the Ka'ba. An infidel, or unbeliever, would take their life in their hands to try to do so. Hence I am persuaded the "brownstone house" is just as hard to attain for Gene as Mecca is in the middle east. Also it can be just as far away as Mecca is, the other side of the world.
The major place in Suadi Arabia is Mecca. Mecca is regarded as the Holiest city in the Religion of Islam. The Kaaba is located in Mecca and in ramadan muslims go there for Hajj.
