Part of his fleet (but the part containing his treasure chests) stranded in Cyprus after a storm in 1191 and Cyprus' ruler Isaac Komnenos - following ancient custom - had seized everything in the wrecked ships. This also included Richard's fiancée and his sister who had been travelling on them, although this seemed to concern Richard less at the time. On learning what had happened, Richard took the rest of his ships to Cyprus and after a friendly meeting with Cyprus' ruler got his money and the ladies back. After that, Isaac Komnenos found to his dismay that Richard showed no eagerness to continue his journey and fight the infidels in the Holy Land but chose to live comfortably off the ruler's hospitality, while his troops harrassed the local population. Finally Isaac Komnenos got so tired of his unwanted guests that he ordered Richard and his troops off his island. A piqued Richard then reacted by conquering the island in a matter of days.
