In 1800, Nicolas Baudin was instructed by the French authorities to conduct surveys and scientific exploration of what was then called "New Holland", I.e. the Western two-thirds of the continent of Australia. In 1801, Baudin first saw Cape Leeuwin in the southwest of the mainland, and then headed north in to survey the western coast. In 1802, he surveyed Van Diemen's land (now Tasmania).
