Puerto Rico is not independent. It is a US Territory.

Puerto Rico has not been independent since the Spanish landed on the island in 1493. It was a possession of the Spanish Crown until 1898. In early 1898 Puerto Rico gained some local autonomy. However later the same year, the US occupied Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War.

Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the United States at the end of the war and it has been a territory of the US since. It is currently considered a Commonwealth and a Free Associated State, but that is a fancy name for a semi-autonimous territory.
