Vermont separated from Massachusetts in 1777 when it declared its independence and became an independent republic. This separation was formalized after the American Revolutionary War, as Vermont sought to establish itself as a separate entity due to disputes over land claims and governance. Vermont was later admitted to the United States as the 14th state on March 4, 1791.
