It is unknown which of the earliest Dutch or Portuguese sailors first met the Aborigines in Western Australia. In 1838, explorer George Grey discovered unusual Aboriginal cave paintings near the head of the Glenelg River. Some of the figures depicted seemed to be wearing long garments, with helmets or hats. Another cave held an unusual painting of a non-Aboriginal man's figure, over 3m long, wearing a flowing reddish gown. Theories suggest that these paintings were early depictions of Portuguese or Spanish mariners or priests who may have visited the area long before any European settlement on the western coast. The only written record of early Europeans meeting the Aboriginal people came from English explorer and pirate William Dampier who, in 1688, described the native population as the "miserablest people in the world".

Why more than half of Australia descended from Europeans?

that question is easy. the europeans 'founded Australia' well the aboriginals were here first but then because the aboriginals hadn't actually claimed the land captain cook came along with his European buddies and claimed it. there are some pirks and disadvantages of this one perk is that now Australia is civilised and is a multi cultural country a dis advantage is that the aboriginals get special treatment by the government but i guess that is okay. but that's my opinion. the europeans brought their people and then the families started taht's why most of australians are europeans.
