Michigan was populated by Native Americans for a long period before the Colonies formed. It's "founding" as a state might have begun when the French began to move in during the 17th century.

There were different disputes between the French, the British and the Americans. After they were resolved, Michigan, which had a state government pretty much in place in 1836, finally became a state on January 26, 1837.

This is a thumbnail sketch.
