There is one thing that accounts for most of the jobs in the United Kingdom. What accounts most is service industry.

Most manufacturing industries have gone from the UK to countries where salaries are much less. Eastern Europe and China among them. The few that are left, tend to be assembly plants rather than manufacturers. The actual manufacturing is done overseas and the components shipped to the UK for assembly. Lots of people now work in service industries which of course can't be done overseas. Having said that, some large organisations are using modern technology and situating their call centres in places like India.
