Believe it or not, "Snipes" are not a real animal!!! Snipes are an urban legend, and it has been a tradition for generations to take young or unexperienced campers 'snipe' hunting in the Utah mountains. The small animals you see at night when you are 'snipe' hunting (with toothpaste and peanut butter as bait, and a pillowcase to catch them in, of course!) are actually potguts... which is another random Utah name for the Uinta Basin Ground Squirrel.
