Most of the foods that are grown in Australia were brought here by the early settlers. There are very few native Australian foods that are used by modern Australians, but macadamia nuts are an increasingly popular food.

Australia grows cereal and grain crops, fruits, nuts, legumes and vegetables of all descriptions and its markets are open to competition in these things from overseas. In addition, there is a strong market for dairy and beef cattle, lamb, pork and ham, fish, chicken and other poultry.

Many of the foods from overseas are those which have been canned - e.g. vegetables, fish, fruits and manufactured goods.
