Is there a Russian princess still living?

There are a number of female nobility who ( cousins, etc) are descendants or collinear relatives of the Romanov (Imperial) and lesser but still princely ( such as Gallitzin) families. I have reason to believe a Russian ( one would have to add ex-officio or in exile) Princess died fairly recently and at her funeral she had various Imperial Russian trappings including a Red Capelet over the top. She would be several generations down the hatch from Anastasia, of course. I seem to recall there is a Princess Catherine Romanov still living. She does not call herself Catherine III, by the way! so it goes.

What is the average weight of a modern seismograph?

There is no flat answer(no pun intended) as there are different typ[es of seismographs. Obvisoulsy the big ones are non-portable and are mounted on fixed axes so they are virtually a part of the earth"s crust of bedrock. These instruments counting auxiliary ballast and such like would weigh several tons. as they are stationary, the weights are not generally quoted. Thee are portable seismometers used for mining and prospecting and these can be as light as perhaps ten or fifteen pounds. all things being equal the big boys are more accurate. in some Seismological stations they have three Seismographs, normally on all the time on different axes- for example: North-south, East_west, and vertical (Up and down) the last application would require a Gallitzin type of Seismogaph invented in Czarist Russia in about l906.This type is made in portable forms but has to be oriented to the precise vertical or horizontal axis before use-rather like a modern 35MM Camera. Sperry made seismographs. They are better known for Gyroscopes , but they did make Sesimographs,.ratrher seismometers, these were Three-axis types and could be used on Survey Ships -for oceanographic work. The three axes (R.P.I.) were selected by small rotary switches like those on some household lamps-twist on and off.

Are seismographs used today?

Certainly. Many of the real old timers, precision instruments of the heavy-duty variety have stood up well and are still in action. There is a ( just discovered this a few minutes ago on the net) a modified Wiechert type seismograph in Sarajevo that dates to the Austro-Hungarian empire- and was installed in l905 and is going strong as a working instrument, not a mere museum piece of antiquity. There are differfent types of seismograph and seismometer is usually applied to more-or-less portable models used for oil and other prospecting- not limited entirely to earthquake studies, thought hat was and is their primary purpose. Some of the generic types are Wiechert, beam displacement- which has two recorders at a 90 degree axis- like an L-shaped room and there is an arrangement of lights and mirrors, more modern ones would use Lasers- there were light-beam seismomometers in use as far back as l952 used to monitor Nuclear bomb tests ( ths shock waves). The Gallitzin, developed around l906 in Czarist Russia, was the first type primarily made to measure vertical shocks. It is an interesting study to see the various forms this device has taken .
