One of East Africa’s hidden treasures is Kigali, the city capital of Rwanda. Founded in 1907 under German colonial rule, independent since 1962. Since then it has become the largest city in Rwanda. Kigali is also where the Rwandan Genocide took place in 1994. The Hutu militia killed close to one million Tutsi’ during that time. Kigali has grown economically and culturally since then. Tin ore is produced in mines and a smelting plant was built to help generate revenue.

Built on hills, the city spreads across four ridges with valleys in between. Visitors to Kigali may notice this flying into Kigali International Airport. Once outside the airport there are several minibuses available for transport to one of Kigali’s International Class Hotels. For lunch stop by Kigali Serena’s Diplomat Restaurant. During the day the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center shares Kigali’s history. At night, Planet Club is the place to be for drinks and a little African and Hip Hop music.
