There are 1,500 Bison in Custer State Park. Although South Dakota has the most bison of any state, the numbers have fallen due to the demand for bison meat. According to the US Department of Agriculture, there were 38,701 bison in South Dakota in 2007. More recent estimates put the number closer to 27,000 in 2010.
Wyoming's flag has an American Bison in the center (as the state's nickname is the "Buffalo State"). The white bison is charged in a field of blue; the boarder of the flag is white and red.
