The word "Taiping" is of Chinese origin. In that language it refers to "peace". It is mostly often associated with the Taiping Rebellion but is also found as the name of an island that is Taiping Island, or Taiping city in Taiwan, Taiping town in Malaysia. The Taiping rebellion that took place over a period of fifteen years in China was started or instigated by Hong and Yang Xiuquan. They were Christian mystics, one of whom Hong, declared that he was the Messiah and the younger brother of Jesus. They garnered widespread support and established the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom against the then Qing Dynasty. Nearly twenty to fifty million people are estimated to have died due to this insurrection.

There is a town in Malaysia of that name. Then there was the 'Taiping Rebellion' in southern China 1850-64 with the rebel movement known as 'The Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace'.
The fall of the city of Shanghai ended the Taiping Rebellion. This event happened in August of 1860.
