The first country to control the Ruanda-Urundi territory, as it was known at the time, was Germany, from the 1890's to 1916. In 1916, Belgium seized control of the area during WWI. Ruanda-Urundi became independent from Belgium in 1962, and Ruanda-Urundi became two seperate countries, Rwanda and Burundi, on July 1 of that year.
