I guess you mean Montezuma II (1466-1520), penultimate Aztec emperor before the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Most of his conquests included the present-day states of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas, on the southern Pacific coast. Note at the time, most of Mexico had city-states with their own government and culture; just like Greece during its Classical Period.
By 1517 he had conquered 48 city-states and over 450 towns and villages. The only dominions that were not conquered by the time contact with Europeans was established, included the Tlaxcalans and the Mixtecs.

Montezuma thought that Cortes and the Spanish were gods so he treated them nicely until he found out that the Spanish want to conquer Aztec.
Montezuma I met with Cortez and exchanged gifts, believing he might be Quetzalcoatl returning as prophesied. Montezuma I welcomed Cortez into Tenochtitlan, but tensions rose as Cortez sought to conquer the Aztec empire.
There is a Lake Montezuma and Montezuma's Castle.
Cortes held Montezuma as a hostage to exert control over the Aztec Empire and to secure his own safety and the safety of his men. By capturing Montezuma, he aimed to manipulate the political structure of the Aztecs, leveraging Montezuma's authority to gain compliance from his subjects. This strategy was part of Cortes's broader plan to conquer the empire and seize its riches while minimizing resistance from the Aztecs. Ultimately, this tactic backfired, leading to increased tensions and conflict.
