Possible origins of natives in Nicaragua may be Paleo-Indians 6000 years ago. However, Europeans first discovered Nicaragua ~1502 when Columbus was in Honduras and explored the east coast on his fourth voyage.

Although Christopher Columbus was the first European to have reached what is now know as Nicaragua, it was Gil Gonzalez Davila in 1520 that was the first to try and conquer it. The first Spanish settlement was not established until 1524 and that was by the conquistador Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba who set up the two main towns called Grenada and Leon.
