The Samoan islands were divided between the United States and Germany in the late 19th century, following a series of conflicts and negotiations. The division was formalized in 1899 with the signing of the Tripartite Convention, which established American control over the eastern islands (now known as American Samoa) and German control over the western islands (now part of the independent nation of Samoa). This division was influenced by the broader imperial interests of the two powers in the Pacific region.
In 1899, the Tripartite Convention divided the Samoan islands between the United States and Germany. After World War I, the German part was ruled by New Zealand, until 1962, when it became an independent nation.
