In 1609, Henry Hudson sailed his ship the Half Moon to Newfoundland, Cape Cod, Chesapeake Bay, and finally up the Hudson River, in search of westward passages across North America. The Dutch established New Netherland (now New York) before losing it to the British.

However, the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, sailing for France in 1524, was likely the first European to visit New York Bay (New York) and Narragansett Bay (Rhode Island), excluding possible unrecorded visits by the Vikings.
