The state of New Jersey owes its name to Sir George Carteret, one of two English colonists who had been granted land by the English Crown which would eventually become America's "Garden State". Carteret served as governor of the Isle of Jersey, one of the Channel Islands south of England, before arriving in the Americas.

When did New Jersey become a colony?
The British took control of the territory that became New Jersey 1664 when they seized the Dutch fort of New Amsterdam. King James later granted the land between the Hudson River and the Delaware River to Sir George Carteret and Lord Berkeley of Stratton. The land was named New Jersey in honor of the channel island of Jersey which had supported the king in the English civil war.
New Jersey became a separate colony in the 1660s when the Dutch surrendered their claim to the area to the English. Initially part of the larger New York colony, it was divided in 1664 and granted to two of the King's loyal supporters, Sir George Carteret and Lord John Berkeley. They established the colony of New Jersey, promoting religious freedom and land grants to attract settlers. Over time, New Jersey developed its own identity and governance, officially becoming a distinct colony.
