For many years, the largest single building private residence in Indiana was the 40,000 square foot mansion of Laurel Hall estate built by the bank executive Stoughton Flecthcer in 1916 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The home is now used as an event space and conference center and it is no longer used as a residence.

Some estates in Indiana, such as Hilbert Mansion in the Carmel, Indiana, built by Stephen Hilbert, the former CEO of Conseco Insurance, have multiple buildings that collectively cover more square footage. Hilbert Mansion now owned by Forrest and Charlotte Lucas, owners of Lucas Oil Products, Inc, covers 55,000 square feet collectively in a main house, a gym, a catering house, and a guest house.

Some people say the largest single-building residence in Indiana is on the estate owned by Richard Freeland, a large Pizza Hut franchise owner, who built his estate in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The main house of the estate is purported to be between 30,000 and 48,000 square feet--so, at the large end of the estimate range it would be a bigger residence than Laurel Hall. But, if it is only 30,000 square feet, then the main house would be substantially smaller than Laurel Hall.
