Mario Monti was the Prime Minister of Italy at the start of 2013. Enrico Letta replaced him on April 28.

Mario Monti, took power during the Italian debt crisis on 2011 November 16. After appointing a technocrat cabinet of non-elected professionals, he persuaded the government to push through sweeping austerity measures. He officially resigned on 2012 December 21, but remained prime minister until elections were held and Letta replaced him. Monti's coalition would place fourth in the elections, behind the Democratic Party, the Center-Right coalition led by Berlusconi's People of Freedom, and the Five-Star Movement.

Enrico Letta, member of the Democratic Party, became the Prime Minister of Italy on 2013 April 28. The Democratic Party managed to form a loose alliance with the People of Freedom to govern.
